Landmark Govan development is honoured at Scottish Home Awards

Highly Commended award for Renovation of the Year for Scottish Home Awards 2018.

Cruden Building together with our client, The Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) Ltd, were awarded Highly Commended for Renovation of the Year for our landmark development at the prestigious Scottish Home Awards 2018.

The awards are Scotland’s largest independent awards for the housing industry and this year saw a record 130 entries across the country.

Our stand-out development at Brand Street and Harvie Street in Govan is set on a historic site.  We sympathetically refurbished a former 1900s red sandstone tram office to create a fantastic development of 85 homes for social rent and 20 mid-market flats for GHA.

The site of the former 1900s tram depot had lain derelict for years.  Rows of tram sheds behind the depot offices were later used as trolley bus garages before the site became a car pound for Strathclyde Police in the 1990s.

What we did

  • Refurbished the tram building and retained the external walls, roof, upper floor and stair cores.
  • Repaired the stone work to maintain the character of the building and installed new sash and case windows.
  • Created a stunning mezzanine level in the maisonette flats with a glass balcony over the kitchen with views out to the street.
  • Sympathetically replicated timber mouldings to return the stairs to their former glory.

The result

We built an exemplar development, consisting of 85 homes for social rent and 20 mid-market flats with parking spaces provided at the rear of the building and access controlled gates for added security.

“We are thrilled to have been recognised for this outstanding development.  Working together with GHA, we have successfully breathed new life into a derelict tram depot whilst providing much-needed attractive, energy-efficient new affordable homes."

Allan Callaghan, Managing Director for Cruden Building
